College is an important step to consider when a student graduates from high school. While some have their hearts set on universities for years, many are just focusing on which colleges are best for their majors just before the new semester begins. Making the transition from high school to college can be a tough and grueling process to overcome, but there are some universities that will make the transition a little smoother for students as they embark a new chapter in their lives. University of Houston, which located near downtown Houston in the historical Third Ward area, was founded in 1927 as a private institution before becoming a four-year university in 1936. The first building to be opened at the university, the Roy Gustav Cullen Building, was named after the son of Hugh Roy Cullen, an oil tycoon who formed several oil companies in the Houston area. This was the first of donations given to the University, as Cullen envisioned University of Houston as a place where young men and women can sustained a valuable education without the limitations of leaving home. The Cullen tradition is surely a staple at the University, because not only are their presence a fixture around campus, but the legacy also bring out the goodness of fellow students as they help one another throughout campus. Being a fellow Cougar, it always good to know that there are people around that will help you find a classroom, or just go out their way to say hello. We're a friendly university, and it shows with the student body. UH is also the most ethnically diverse university in the nation. With 34,000 students enrolled, over 130 nations enrolled to partake in various studies the University offers. In other words, UH is a melting pot with various nationalities and cultures. College is not just a learning experience inside the classroom; it's an experience outside as well, so it's good to interact with different people to learn their culture and values. The University of Houston, which is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, offers 109 baccalaureate, 131 masters, 3 professional, and 51 doctorate degrees in various fields of the university's 12 colleges. From Business to Communications, a prospective student can find any type of degree that will suit their professional needs to get a head start into their future. For more information regarding the university's accreditation, contact the Commission on Colleges at 404-679-4500. The mission of the University of Houston is to "provide a range of educational programs that foster an intellectually and culturally diverse environment that enhances individual growth and development."The programs offered at the University are wide range and are taught by the most experienced and highly educated professors a student could ask for. Several colleges are also given high honors by prestigious publications. U.S. News & World Report ranks the Bauer College of Business as the top Business program for undergraduates in Houston and third in the state of Texas. The college is also receiving national honors as it is ranked 44th among public universities in the nation. Going back to being a multicultural university, UH is ranked second among national universities for Campus Ethnic Diversity in U.S. News & Report as 2007 America's Best Colleges. The University is also home to the Creative Writing Program that is offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Social Science (which I am a graduate from). This program offers degrees in poetry, fiction, and non-fiction, as well as a PhD and M.F.A. degrees. The UH writing program was one of the first in the nation to offer a PhD degree in creative writing. Being a Communication major, I would be biased if I say that University of Houston's Communication program is the best in the country, so I would just imply that the university does have a communication department that is top notch with students who have an interest in journalism, public relations, or broadcast technology. Aside from communications, there are several classes that are worth noting when considering admission into UH. One is PSYC 3350, which is Introduction to Cognitive Psychology. The course is an information-processing approach to human functioning introducing topics in language, thought, judgment, and skill performance. This class was truly a mind-motivating course because you would have to think about every subject presented in the course. It gave insight onto what a person could be experiencing in certain situation. Crisis Communications, or COMM 4335, is also a good course to take because it introduces potential situations that go on in society on a regular basis. I took this class on a whim, but as the semester progress, I started to learn more about what to do if I ever became involved in certain situations. One assignment I had to cover was a research paper on school violence and the psychological aspect of it. I found the assignment to be interesting as well as informative to know the warning signs of a child if he or she is endanger. One of the most easiest classes a student can possibly enroll in at UH is COMM 4378: Social Impact of New Information Technology. This course details the study and analysis of the cultural and social impact of contemporary communication and information technology. This course is simple because of the assignment the professor gave to the class. The class was more of a discussion forum, as it gave us, the students, a chance to talk about different technology and the changes it made in today's society. Although it was simple, it was also fun because we rarely had exams. Out of all the classes I taken at UH, I believe the most entertaining was COMM 3353: Web Technologies. Going into today's corporate world, it's always good to know the newest techniques to the Internet. Knowing how to build a Web page was an experience I can take into my career as well as in my personal life. Although it's a lot of work to develop a Web page, I had fun doing it, and I can now say that I can set up my own Web site. So whether you're a COMM major or just finding an elective to get into, I would highly recommend taking this class for your business venture. One of the factors of going to college is the campus life. Even though receiving a quality education is important, a person has to have some sort of relaxation and fun. At University of Houston, there are various activities that will have a lasting impact on any student from years to come. Activities at UH include more than 300 student organizations, a film series, concerts, theatrical productions, art exhibits, and Division 1 NCAA athletics. During the first two days of classes for the new semester, the University holds Cougars First Impression. This is when the faculty and staff turn out to welcome new and returning students. Sports are always a staple to any school a student goes to, and UH are proud of their sports heritage by having teams exceed to championship or tournament status. Overall, the athletics department has been to fifteen bowl games, five NCAA men's basketball Final Four appearances, eighteen NCAA tournaments, and six NIT preseason tournaments, sixteen NCAA golf championships, and trips to college baseball's World Series. UH football team gained national attention by becoming Conference USA Champions in 2006 (which was truly a memorable event because I was there). UH alumni also include several athletes that are renowned in today's sports world, such as Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Fred Couples, and Carl Lewis. One of the events that bring out alumni and students to is Frontier Fiesta, which is a three-day event that in run by the student body to promote scholarships, community, and education within the University and to the community. A setup is a re-creation of the 19th century Western town and it offers diverse talent of the student body and features free concerts, variety shows, carnival booths, and a BBQ cook-off. Past performers who graced the concert stage at Hofheinz Pavilion included T.I and Dem Franchize Boyz. One time I brought some of my friends who attend other universities and they were quite impressed. They wished their colleges would do something similar like Frontier Fiesta on their campuses to grab attention of students. Homecoming is always fun at UH. From the various parades throughout the campus, to the alumni golf tournament, there's always something for anyone to enjoy as students, alumni, and fans alike show their Cougar pride for the weeklong event. The best place to hang out is the University Center. The UC (in which we call it) is known as the ⦡mp;#128;Ŧquot;living room⦡mp;#128;¦amp;#157; of the campus, and it serves as a spot for students to take a break and relax from a hectic day of classes. The two level, sun filled building provides the campus bookstore, child center, salon, ice cream shop, game room, dining hall, fitness center, and Woodforest Bank. This is truly the place to go to for your daily regime, because everything is at your reach. So there is no need to go off campus. But if you feel the need to break free from the campus life for just a few hours, there are a few places you can go to expand your horizons in Houston. The city of Houston provides an array of cultural and entertainment activities, including the Museum District, (which is not far from the University), concert halls, theatres, restaurants such as the Aquarium, This Is It Soul Food, and The Breakfast Klub, and sporting events at the Toyota Center (which is located downtown). Whether you are new to Houston or been living here for years, the best event to check out is the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, when arrives in the third week of February and runs for three weeks. The event is the world's largest livestock exhibition and rodeo event. Not only is UH located near downtown, but it is practically accessible throughout any part of Houston. The University is near various areas such as the Galleria, Bayou Place, Reliant Stadium, Hermann Park, and the Houston Zoo. Galveston is also close by as you can go to the beach and parlay in the sand or go enjoy an Imax show at Moody Gardens. The nightlife is just as exciting and thrilling as your day events as every thriving club in Houston is near downtown. Whether you into dancing the night away or sitting down and relaxing, there is a spot that will sure to get you going till the early morning. My personal favorite is Hush Nightclub. It's a little far from the college, but the atmosphere is magnificent. I always have a good time when I go, so that's one place you should definitely check out. But an activity that is worth mentioning is the campus. The 560-acre campus, which includes greenery, fountains, and sculptures, not only give you exercise from walking from building to building, but you can also enjoy the atmosphere surrounding the University. When I first attended UH, I was always confused about the campus. I would walk from one section, thinking I was on the right track, but I always ended back where I started. Now, it's a breeze going from one location to the next. Just walking around campus is an experience; because you know that one-day you will not be able to live those moments again when you actually go off into the ⦡mp;#128;Ŧquot;real world.⦡mp;#128;¦amp;#157; UH have two main housing areas for dormitories, which are Moody Towers and the Quadrangle. Moody Towers, or ⦡mp;#128;Ŧquot;the towers,⦡mp;#128;¦amp;#157; is the largest area of residence halls, which consists of eighteen stories and over 1,100 students lived there. The Quadrangle, or ⦡mp;#128;Ŧquot;the quad,⦡mp;#128;¦amp;#157; is the oldest housing building on campus and it is broken into several co-ed dorm halls: Bates, Law, Oberholtzer, Settegast, and Taub. If you rather stay off campus, there are some apartments that are near the campus that you can choose from. Cullen Oaks, Bayou Oaks, and Cambridge Oaks are three apartments that offer the luxury of staying on your own without the limitations that a dorm may bring. Recently the University announced that they will begin developing a new loft-styled apartment complex on campus specifically for graduates and professional students. The housing area will include retail stores, lecture halls, and recreation facilities. The apartments are scheduled to finish by 2009. University of Houston is a university that preserve on its history in excellence and with pride. I am proud to say that I am a graduate of this university because its name lives up to its standards as being the best of it class. One thing to remember when considering a school is the impact a school will give to you when you walk away as a graduate. For me, going to college is not just about attending classes and staying up late studying or typing out a research paper. College is a learning experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life. I truly believe University of Houston gave me the guidance I need to move on into my professional career; and I believe UH will do the same for you as well. So for future students going to University of Houston, I have to say good luck and may your experience be enjoyable and long lasing. GO COOGS!!
