College               is               not               just               a               learning               experience               inside               the               classroom;               it's               an               experience               outside               as               well,               so               it's               good               to               interact               with               different               people               to               learn               their               culture               and               values.
               The               University               of               Houston,               which               is               accredited               by               the               Commission               on               Colleges               of               the               Southern               Association               of               Colleges               and               Schools,               offers               109               baccalaureate,               131               masters,               3               professional,               and               51               doctorate               degrees               in               various               fields               of               the               university's               12               colleges.

U.S.

News               &               World               Report               ranks               the               Bauer               College               of               Business               as               the               top               Business               program               for               undergraduates               in               Houston               and               third               in               the               state               of               Texas.

The               college               is               also               receiving               national               honors               as               it               is               ranked               44th               among               public               universities               in               the               nation.

Going               back               to               being               a               multicultural               university,               UH               is               ranked               second               among               national               universities               for               Campus               Ethnic               Diversity               in               U.S.

News               &               Report               as               2007               America's               Best               Colleges.

The               University               is               also               home               to               the               Creative               Writing               Program               that               is               offered               through               the               College               of               Liberal               Arts               and               Social               Science               (which               I               am               a               graduate               from).

This               program               offers               degrees               in               poetry,               fiction,               and               non-fiction,               as               well               as               a               PhD               and               M.F.A.

degrees.

The               UH               writing               program               was               one               of               the               first               in               the               nation               to               offer               a               PhD               degree               in               creative               writing.
               Being               a               Communication               major,               I               would               be               biased               if               I               say               that               University               of               Houston's               Communication               program               is               the               best               in               the               country,               so               I               would               just               imply               that               the               university               does               have               a               communication               department               that               is               top               notch               with               students               who               have               an               interest               in               journalism,               public               relations,               or               broadcast               technology.
               Aside               from               communications,               there               are               several               classes               that               are               worth               noting               when               considering               admission               into               UH.

One               is               PSYC               3350,               which               is               Introduction               to               Cognitive               Psychology.

The               course               is               an               information-processing               approach               to               human               functioning               introducing               topics               in               language,               thought,               judgment,               and               skill               performance.

This               class               was               truly               a               mind-motivating               course               because               you               would               have               to               think               about               every               subject               presented               in               the               course.

It               gave               insight               onto               what               a               person               could               be               experiencing               in               certain               situation.

Crisis               Communications,               or               COMM               4335,               is               also               a               good               course               to               take               because               it               introduces               potential               situations               that               go               on               in               society               on               a               regular               basis.

I               took               this               class               on               a               whim,               but               as               the               semester               progress,               I               started               to               learn               more               about               what               to               do               if               I               ever               became               involved               in               certain               situations.

One               assignment               I               had               to               cover               was               a               research               paper               on               school               violence               and               the               psychological               aspect               of               it.

I               found               the               assignment               to               be               interesting               as               well               as               informative               to               know               the               warning               signs               of               a               child               if               he               or               she               is               endanger.

One               of               the               most               easiest               classes               a               student               can               possibly               enroll               in               at               UH               is               COMM               4378:               Social               Impact               of               New               Information               Technology.

This               course               details               the               study               and               analysis               of               the               cultural               and               social               impact               of               contemporary               communication               and               information               technology.

This               course               is               simple               because               of               the               assignment               the               professor               gave               to               the               class.

The               class               was               more               of               a               discussion               forum,               as               it               gave               us,               the               students,               a               chance               to               talk               about               different               technology               and               the               changes               it               made               in               today's               society.

Although               it               was               simple,               it               was               also               fun               because               we               rarely               had               exams.

Out               of               all               the               classes               I               taken               at               UH,               I               believe               the               most               entertaining               was               COMM               3353:               Web               Technologies.

Going               into               today's               corporate               world,               it's               always               good               to               know               the               newest               techniques               to               the               Internet.

Knowing               how               to               build               a               Web               page               was               an               experience               I               can               take               into               my               career               as               well               as               in               my               personal               life.

Although               it's               a               lot               of               work               to               develop               a               Web               page,               I               had               fun               doing               it,               and               I               can               now               say               that               I               can               set               up               my               own               Web               site.

So               whether               you're               a               COMM               major               or               just               finding               an               elective               to               get               into,               I               would               highly               recommend               taking               this               class               for               your               business               venture.
               One               of               the               factors               of               going               to               college               is               the               campus               life.

Even               though               receiving               a               quality               education               is               important,               a               person               has               to               have               some               sort               of               relaxation               and               fun.

At               University               of               Houston,               there               are               various               activities               that               will               have               a               lasting               impact               on               any               student               from               years               to               come.

Activities               at               UH               include               more               than               300               student               organizations,               a               film               series,               concerts,               theatrical               productions,               art               exhibits,               and               Division               1               NCAA               athletics.

During               the               first               two               days               of               classes               for               the               new               semester,               the               University               holds               Cougars               First               Impression.

This               is               when               the               faculty               and               staff               turn               out               to               welcome               new               and               returning               students.

Sports               are               always               a               staple               to               any               school               a               student               goes               to,               and               UH               are               proud               of               their               sports               heritage               by               having               teams               exceed               to               championship               or               tournament               status.

Overall,               the               athletics               department               has               been               to               fifteen               bowl               games,               five               NCAA               men's               basketball               Final               Four               appearances,               eighteen               NCAA               tournaments,               and               six               NIT               preseason               tournaments,               sixteen               NCAA               golf               championships,               and               trips               to               college               baseball's               World               Series.

UH               football               team               gained               national               attention               by               becoming               Conference               USA               Champions               in               2006               (which               was               truly               a               memorable               event               because               I               was               there).

UH               alumni               also               include               several               athletes               that               are               renowned               in               today's               sports               world,               such               as               Hakeem               Olajuwon,               Clyde               Drexler,               Fred               Couples,               and               Carl               Lewis.
               One               of               the               events               that               bring               out               alumni               and               students               to               is               Frontier               Fiesta,               which               is               a               three-day               event               that               in               run               by               the               student               body               to               promote               scholarships,               community,               and               education               within               the               University               and               to               the               community.

A               setup               is               a               re-creation               of               the               19th               century               Western               town               and               it               offers               diverse               talent               of               the               student               body               and               features               free               concerts,               variety               shows,               carnival               booths,               and               a               BBQ               cook-off.

Past               performers               who               graced               the               concert               stage               at               Hofheinz               Pavilion               included               T.I               and               Dem               Franchize               Boyz.

One               time               I               brought               some               of               my               friends               who               attend               other               universities               and               they               were               quite               impressed.

They               wished               their               colleges               would               do               something               similar               like               Frontier               Fiesta               on               their               campuses               to               grab               attention               of               students.
               Homecoming               is               always               fun               at               UH.

From               the               various               parades               throughout               the               campus,               to               the               alumni               golf               tournament,               there's               always               something               for               anyone               to               enjoy               as               students,               alumni,               and               fans               alike               show               their               Cougar               pride               for               the               weeklong               event.

The               best               place               to               hang               out               is               the               University               Center.

The               UC               (in               which               we               call               it)               is               known               as               the               â¦¡mp;#128;Ŧquot;living               room⦡mp;#128;¦amp;#157;               of               the               campus,               and               it               serves               as               a               spot               for               students               to               take               a               break               and               relax               from               a               hectic               day               of               classes.

The               two               level,               sun               filled               building               provides               the               campus               bookstore,               child               center,               salon,               ice               cream               shop,               game               room,               dining               hall,               fitness               center,               and               Woodforest               Bank.

This               is               truly               the               place               to               go               to               for               your               daily               regime,               because               everything               is               at               your               reach.

So               there               is               no               need               to               go               off               campus.

But               if               you               feel               the               need               to               break               free               from               the               campus               life               for               just               a               few               hours,               there               are               a               few               places               you               can               go               to               expand               your               horizons               in               Houston.

The               city               of               Houston               provides               an               array               of               cultural               and               entertainment               activities,               including               the               Museum               District,               (which               is               not               far               from               the               University),               concert               halls,               theatres,               restaurants               such               as               the               Aquarium,               This               Is               It               Soul               Food,               and               The               Breakfast               Klub,               and               sporting               events               at               the               Toyota               Center               (which               is               located               downtown).

Whether               you               are               new               to               Houston               or               been               living               here               for               years,               the               best               event               to               check               out               is               the               Houston               Livestock               Show               and               Rodeo,               when               arrives               in               the               third               week               of               February               and               runs               for               three               weeks.

The               event               is               the               world's               largest               livestock               exhibition               and               rodeo               event.

Not               only               is               UH               located               near               downtown,               but               it               is               practically               accessible               throughout               any               part               of               Houston.

The               University               is               near               various               areas               such               as               the               Galleria,               Bayou               Place,               Reliant               Stadium,               Hermann               Park,               and               the               Houston               Zoo.

Galveston               is               also               close               by               as               you               can               go               to               the               beach               and               parlay               in               the               sand               or               go               enjoy               an               Imax               show               at               Moody               Gardens.
               The               nightlife               is               just               as               exciting               and               thrilling               as               your               day               events               as               every               thriving               club               in               Houston               is               near               downtown.

Whether               you               into               dancing               the               night               away               or               sitting               down               and               relaxing,               there               is               a               spot               that               will               sure               to               get               you               going               till               the               early               morning.

My               personal               favorite               is               Hush               Nightclub.

It's               a               little               far               from               the               college,               but               the               atmosphere               is               magnificent.

I               always               have               a               good               time               when               I               go,               so               that's               one               place               you               should               definitely               check               out.
               But               an               activity               that               is               worth               mentioning               is               the               campus.

The               560-acre               campus,               which               includes               greenery,               fountains,               and               sculptures,               not               only               give               you               exercise               from               walking               from               building               to               building,               but               you               can               also               enjoy               the               atmosphere               surrounding               the               University.

When               I               first               attended               UH,               I               was               always               confused               about               the               campus.

I               would               walk               from               one               section,               thinking               I               was               on               the               right               track,               but               I               always               ended               back               where               I               started.

Now,               it's               a               breeze               going               from               one               location               to               the               next.

Just               walking               around               campus               is               an               experience;               because               you               know               that               one-day               you               will               not               be               able               to               live               those               moments               again               when               you               actually               go               off               into               the               â¦¡mp;#128;Ŧquot;real               world.⦡mp;#128;¦amp;#157;
               UH               have               two               main               housing               areas               for               dormitories,               which               are               Moody               Towers               and               the               Quadrangle.

Moody               Towers,               or               â¦¡mp;#128;Ŧquot;the               towers,⦡mp;#128;¦amp;#157;               is               the               largest               area               of               residence               halls,               which               consists               of               eighteen               stories               and               over               1,100               students               lived               there.

The               Quadrangle,               or               â¦¡mp;#128;Ŧquot;the               quad,⦡mp;#128;¦amp;#157;               is               the               oldest               housing               building               on               campus               and               it               is               broken               into               several               co-ed               dorm               halls:               Bates,               Law,               Oberholtzer,               Settegast,               and               Taub.

If               you               rather               stay               off               campus,               there               are               some               apartments               that               are               near               the               campus               that               you               can               choose               from.

Cullen               Oaks,               Bayou               Oaks,               and               Cambridge               Oaks               are               three               apartments               that               offer               the               luxury               of               staying               on               your               own               without               the               limitations               that               a               dorm               may               bring.

Recently               the               University               announced               that               they               will               begin               developing               a               new               loft-styled               apartment               complex               on               campus               specifically               for               graduates               and               professional               students.

The               housing               area               will               include               retail               stores,               lecture               halls,               and               recreation               facilities.

The               apartments               are               scheduled               to               finish               by               2009.
               University               of               Houston               is               a               university               that               preserve               on               its               history               in               excellence               and               with               pride.

I               am               proud               to               say               that               I               am               a               graduate               of               this               university               because               its               name               lives               up               to               its               standards               as               being               the               best               of               it               class.

One               thing               to               remember               when               considering               a               school               is               the               impact               a               school               will               give               to               you               when               you               walk               away               as               a               graduate.

For               me,               going               to               college               is               not               just               about               attending               classes               and               staying               up               late               studying               or               typing               out               a               research               paper.

College               is               a               learning               experience               that               will               stay               with               you               for               the               rest               of               your               life.

I               truly               believe               University               of               Houston               gave               me               the               guidance               I               need               to               move               on               into               my               professional               career;               and               I               believe               UH               will               do               the               same               for               you               as               well.

So               for               future               students               going               to               University               of               Houston,               I               have               to               say               good               luck               and               may               your               experience               be               enjoyable               and               long               lasing.
