College               is               a               monumental               step               in               any               young               adult's               life.

After               years               of               frustrations               with               high               school               teachers,               pesky               classmates               and               endless               arguments               with               your               parents,               freedom               appears               on               the               horizon.

Graduation               day               is               nearing,               and               as               soon               as               summer               hits,               you               vow               to               turn               your               back               on               your               town               and               not               turn               back.

So               what               do               you               do               start               doing               as               this               realization               hits?

You               begin               applying               to               colleges.

Wow!

Is               this               a               real               eye               opener!

Personally,               I               was               shocked               at               the               moolah               each               college               extracted               from               my               already               dismal               bank               account.

Scholarships?

Wish               I               would               have               looked               a               bit               harder               into               those.

The               overall               costs?

I               really               needed               to               do               a               bit               more               research               before               I               made               the               plunge               into               college               application               process,               housing,               and               the               rest               of               the               mess               that               came               my               way               in               my               quest               for               a               little               personal               freedom               and               an               education.
Remember,               you're               going               to               pay,               and               you're               going               to               pay               big               time               to               go               to               college.

The               fees               begin               to               roll               in               at               application               time,               and               they               never               seem               to               stop.

Even               before               tuition,               housing,               and               school               fees               are               due,               the               many               hidden               fees               eat               away               at               your               paycheck.
With               any               fortune,               you               won't               have               to               go               through               as               much               sticker               shock               as               I               went               through               when               I               began               the               college               process.

Here's               a               small               list               of               things,               mostly               hidden               costs,               you               should               be               prepared               to               pay.
               1.

Colleges               charge               just               to               consider               you               a               future               student
               Your               free               education               is               over.

College               and               universities               charge               you               a               large               sum               of               money               just               to               consider               you               a               potential               student.

The               average               cost               for               an               application               is               about               $40,               and               you're               going               to               want               to               apply               to               at               least               3               or               4               colleges,               just               in               case.

That's               about               $150               in               start-up               costs.
               2.

Next,               there's               the               campus               tours
OK,               so               campus               tours               aren't               necessary,               but               believe               me,               you'll               want               to               take               a               trip               to               at               least               one               of               your               choices.

Not               only               does               a               campus               tour               give               a               general               idea               about               what               campus               life               is               like,               you               get               the               chance               to               see               the               dorms,               find               out               about               local               attractions               and               entertainment,               and               learn               about               college               life.

Very               beneficial.

Depending               on               how               far               away               you               live,               traveling               can               cost               from               $50               -               a               lot.

There's               hotels,               meals,               and,               of               course,               souvenirs               to               purchase.

There's               another               chunk               out               of               your               savings.
               3.

Once               you've               settled               on               a               college,               more               fees               start               rolling               in
The               application               fee               is               only               the               beginning.

Once               you've               settled               on               a               university,               the               university               is               going               to               start               sucking               away               at               your               bank               account.

First,               there's               the               mandatory               "freshman               orientation."               At               freshman               orientation,               which,               by               the               way,               cost               about               $100,               you               sign               up               for               classes,               meet               with               academic               advisers,               and               learn               how               your               campus               works.

Very               beneficial,               and               very               costly.

Next,               there's...
               4.

Housing,               what               about               housing?
               Ahh...

the               question               that               strikes               every               college               student.

Do               I               live               on               campus               or               off               campus?

Whatever               your               choice               is,               its               going               to               cost               you               another               large               sum               of               money.

It'll               cost               about               $150-300.

Also               bear               in               mind,               living               off               campus               may               seem               cheaper               at               first,               but               when               utilities,               cable,               food,               commuting               costs,               and               other               necessities               are               factored               in,               the               price               comes               out               about               the               same.

You're               going               to               want               to               apply               for               housing               early               in               order               to               ensure               you               get               housed               where               you               want.

I               recommend               applying               for               housing               as               soon               as               you're               sure               which               university               you               will               attend.

It               solves               the               problem               of               trying               to               find               a               place               to               live               when               all               the               housing               by               the               campus               is               filled.

Then,               of               course,               you               must               buy               the               utensils,               gear,               and               household               items               the               apartment               and               dorm               won't               provide.

Another               $100+               in               costs.
OK,               I               think               I've               hit               most               of               the               hidden               fees               that               aren't               advertised               in               any               university               recruitment               flyer.

Before               fees               and               tuition,               you're               looking               at               $550+               in               fees.

This               is               assuming               you               travel               conservatively               on               your               college               tour               and               housing               was               only               a               $150               deposit.

Perhaps               Mom               and               Dad               aren't               so               bad               after               all.

Chances               are,               they're               going               to               help               you               foot               a               lot               of               the               bill.

Be               sure               to               thank               them               for               all               the               trouble               they've               gone               through               with               you.

Believe               it               or               not,               you               will               find               that               you               miss               them               when               you               move               out               for               that               freshman               year.

Besides,               I               can               almost               guarantee               you'll               need               to               fall               back               on               their               financial               support               at               least               once               or               twice               in               your               college               career.

Don't               leave               a               bitter               taste               in               your               parents               mouth.
