About 'online tuition fees'|University of the People, The World’s First Tuition Free Online University
In the past ten years I have attended four different colleges, due to moving around, graduating with my Associates Degree, and starting at a four year state school. Trying to understand the cost of education per semester can be confusing if you think you are only paying the per credit hour costs. There are many "hidden" fees associated with the college or university where you choose to attend. It is important to have an understanding of the typical fees, so you're not surprised when you receive your (or child's) first bill. There are two areas where costs may differ from each other. That is the school's (meaning the learning program Arts, Sciences, Mathematics, etc.) individual costs, and the learning fees also associated with courses which require lab work. Those classes or schools will charge different fees per semester and will vary tremendously through your educational career. The typical breakdown for general university fees, for in-residence students, (out of residence students, or out of state students, have considerably higher fees) is pretty much the same anywhere you go. Of course, state school fees, will be higher than those of a community college. The University of Arkansas, where I attended school most recently, fees for twenty-four credit hours are as follows: (figures taken from the University of Arkansas website.) The following figures are for in-residence students only. "For 24 Credit Hours: Student Activity Fee: 38.40 Safe Ride Fee: 5.26 Media Fee: 16.56 Technology Fee: 53.76 Network and Data Systems Fee: 212.16 Student Health Fee: 191.52 AR Union Fee: 75.36 Health Phys Ed. And Recreation Fee: 191.52 Fine Arts Activity Fee: 6.48 Distinguished Lecture Fee: 10.80 Student Readership Fee: 7.20 ELPT Testing Fee (1st semester only): 10.00 Enhanced Learning Center Fee: 24.00 Non-Immigrant Student Service Fee: 157.50 Mandatory Orientation Fee: 100.00 ID Card Fee 22.00 Total Fees: 1080.78" (uark.edu) Notice, this breakdown did not include textbooks. Textbooks are extremely expensive. There are ways to cut the costs of your books by purchasing at used bookstores or online, but the expense will still be high. As a student at the University of Arkansas I generally spent around $500.00 for text books a semester and that was for only twelve credit hours. You will find that foreign language books may be your biggest expense, because often times they include CDs, as well as membership into online learning labs. Of course if you or your child are planning to stay in a dorm room, there are more fees to be aware of than just the general fees. A dorm room can be a considerable cost on top of what you're paying already. The typical cost for a dorm at the University of Arkansas is around $7,500 for two semesters (uark.edu). This does not include insurance fees which are mandatory for any student who can not prove current medical coverage. Insurance fees run around $1,030 a semester. Meal plans will also be needed if the student is staying in the dorm which according to College Confidential can range from $1,000 to nearly $2,000 or more depending on the school. Dorm fees can be cheaper than living in a Greek house, but depending on the Greek organization may run about the same. Typical fees, aside from lodging, for either of the Greek house type residences are more costly than those of the dorm residence. Other fees which may apply include membership fees which according to the University of Alabama range from $2,500 to $1,700 a semester, plus the initial new membership fee which can cost about $250. Attending college is one of the best decisions you or your child can make. It is the place where your son or daughter will learn how to support themselves and their future families. So, it is important to know the fees that you will be paying, so you can make the best choices for their educational goals.
